FOSSIL HUNTER DISCOVERS GIGANTIC CRAB IN NEW ZEALAND—A NEW, EXTINCT SPECIES

SMITHSONIANMAG.COM

Large crab fossils found in New Zealand's North Island have led to the discovery of a new species called the "Southern Giant Crab" Pseudocarcinus karlraubenheimeri. These crabs lived approx. 8.8 million years ago during the Miocene era. This is the first evidence that these giant crabs once lived in New Zealand. The conditions back then, such as plentiful food and the right environment, allowed these crabs to thrive until they eventually disappeared from the area.
